This manuscript has not been examined. The musical quotation is
of the first three bars (with upbeat) of the fourth movement of
the Second Symphony (Urlicht), laid out on two staves
with text. The inscription reads:
Vergessen Sie nicht, liebes Fräulein, Ihren / Sie sehr
verehrenden Gustav Mahler / Gedenke des 9. Aprils!
This refers to the
first Viennese performance of the work, on 9 April 1899,
conducted by Mahler, at which the alto solo was sung by Marcella
Pregi (1866–1958). |
