				|  | Although this 33-bar sketch appears on the conjugate leaf that 
				originally formed the back wrapper of the autograph of the Piano 
				Quartet movement in A minor, the distant tonal relationship 
				between the two movements makes it very unlikely that they were 
				intended for the same multi-movement work. If either of these 
				works was eventually completed it is possible that it was the
				
				work entered (unsuccesfully) by Mahler in 1877 for the 
				competition organised by the
				
				St Petersburg Society for Chamber Music in 1877. 
				The score of his entry was not returned. |
