Miklosich (c. 1858–1933) was the son of the distinguished philologist Franz Ritter v. Miklosich (1813-1891). At the time of the score's acquisition he was living in the family home. He trained as a lawyer and when he retired from the judiciary in 1917 was granted the title of Hofrat.

This printed score seems never to have been placed on sale, and was probably only available for hire by theatres: the title page/wrapper design provides spaces for details of the hire to be added by hand. Two copyists were used: copyist A: Act I, Entr’Act, Act III, pp. 34–59, 65–135; copyist B: Act II and the rest of Act III.

The D-B catalogue indicates that the copy there used to have a list of corrections; this was not present in 1998. The D-Mbs copy was part of the original performance material used at the the Königl. Hof- und National-Theater, Munich, for performances in 1888, and is numbered 'III': the cover and title page bear the information 'Dieses Exemplar ist nur bestimmt zur Benutzung bei den öffentlichen Aufführungen für das Kgl. Hofoperntheater in München'.  The score contains performance markings and revisions (reductions) to the orchestration, and an indication that the Entr'Act was omitted, at least in some performances.

A complete colour facsimile of the A-Wn copy is available on the library website.

This part set is part of the original performance material used at the the Königl. Hof- und National-Theater, Munich for performances in 1888, and was probably ready by March. This material has not been examined: the description is based on the library catalogue record.

It appears that the work may have been performed in Munich with a relatively small string section (at most 8, 8, 4, 4, 4), and that the trombones and third trumpet may have been omitted in some performances.

No. 2 (Rondo à la Polacca) is printed in C major: in PF it is in D major (see also PV1b and PTp2 below). There is evidence to suggest that the initial engraving was completed in some haste: the subsequent off-prints of individual numbers (see below) include additions to the music and sung text.

Hans von Bülow had received a copy by March 1888 and the arrangement was described as having just been published in a February issue of the Signale für das Musikalische Welt. The D-Mbs copies have not been examined: the details here are derived from the catalogue records. These copies were used at the the Königl. Hof- und National-Theater, Munich for performances in 1888:

St.th. 1123-7 were the copies used for the principals  (the copy for Don Gomez lacks pp. 209–223);

St.th. 1123-8 was used by the chorus repetiteur;

St.th. 1123-9 was the Regie-Clavier-Auszug, used by the director Carl Brulliot (annotated on p. 223: Eingerichtet im März 1888. von Carl Brulliot).

St.th. 1123-10 was used by the director, stage manager and prompt.

This very curious publication has as the piano part the reduction for solo piano without text, PTp2, so the piano doubles the voice parts throughout. It was presumably issued after that arrangement (March 1889) and before 22 August 1890 (the date stamped on the GB-Lbl copy).

The adverts on the back wrapper suggest that this impression probably dates from 1921 or later (the collection Lieder der Heimat edited by Arnold Krug was announced in the January 1921 issue of Hofmeister).

Below the price on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped in black: Preis ungültig! / C. F. Kahnt / Leipzig. On the title page the price has been deleted and replaced in pencil with 10.–.

The same footnote has been added to No. 2 (Rondo à la Polacca) and No. 15 Terzettino. (Canon): Diese Nummer steht in der Orchester-Partitur einen Ton höher. In addition, No. 4 Romanze von dem verliebten Kater Mansor is supplied with a tempo marking: Andante (see also PV41: the marking was omitted from PF and PV1 and is not included in the scholarly edition).

This edition, which on [ii] describes itself as ‘Als Manuscripte gedruckte’, contains the complete text (sung and spoken) and were presumably intended for use by theatre staff. The D-Mbs copies were used at the the Königl. Hof- und National-Theater, Munich for performances in 1888. St.th. 1123-14 was the director's copy with production notes on interleaved pages, and the annotation Eingerichtet im März 1888 von Carl Brulliot; St.th. 1123-15 was a prompt copy. None of the copies have been examined, and the descriptions are derived from the catalogue record.

No. 2 (Rondo à la Polacca) is printed in C major with the footnote 'Original in D.' on p. 10: in PF it is in D major.

Kahnt licensed the publication of this arrangement for inclusion in Eulenburg's musikalischer Haus- u. Familienkalender für 1889, where it appeared on pp. 48–9. It is an extract from Hans Walter's Klänge, a selection of arrangements of numbers from the opera (see PTSp23):
