The title of no. 4 is given at the head of the autograph and the first edition of the orchestral score as Wer hat dies Liedel erdacht?. The autograph and the first edition of the voice and piano version, the printed wrapper of both versions and the programmes of the first two performances conducted by Mahler give the title adopted here.
