Rehearsal numbers in Mahler's Wunderhorn settings
Mahler's placing of rehearsal numbers in his scores generally is a subject that merits further exploration, not least because it may reflect changes in his rehearsal practices. In the case of the Wunderhorn settings it has to be admitted that neither he nor his publishers (Erste Wiener Zeitungsgesellschaft and C. F. Kahnt) were as helpful to singers and conductors as they could have been. Mahler provided no rehearsal numbers except in Urlicht (where the numbers used in the symphonic version were adopted), Revelge and Der Tamboursg'sell, and even these numbers were not included in the published piano-vocal scores of the Des Knaben Wunderhorn or the Sieben Lieder, despite the fact that such scores would have been used by singers in rehearsals with orchestras. Nevertheless, the omission of his rehearsal numbers in the recent editions of the orchestral versions of the Wunderhorn settings published by the Internationale Gustav Mahler Gesellschaft (SWXIV/2, NKGXIV/2) is regrettable. The list that follows provides details of the placing of rehearsal numbers in the songs concerned:
