This manuscript was either copied from a
currently untraced autograph piano-vocal score ([AV2m]),
or (less likely)
SS2m,
perhaps as late as 1904 in connection with preparations of the
first performance on 29 January 1905; some of Mahler's
annotations suggest that he rehearsed the
song from this copy. The manuscript was at some point folded in
half vertically, probably to facilitate its dispatch by post. It was subsequently used as the printer's copy for the first edition of the
voice and piano version (PV2m1). |
