Notes

This manuscript in the hand of  the arranger, Max Puttmann, served as the printer's copy for the first edition (PF2t1) and the plate numbers of the score (7789) and parts (7790) have been added at the foot of fol. 1r. The annotation 75951/2 on 1r is probably a  reference/order number connected with the engraving or printing of the arrangement. The manuscript is not dated, and the Hofmeister Monatsbericht includes no entry for the first edition, but the plate number suggests that it was part of a batch of newly originated scores for the Mahler songs prepared in late 1916 and first issued in mid-1917.

Puttmann retains Mahler's scoring except that he has both oboes double on cor anglais.
