Notes

This very brown leaf has been unevenly trimmed, with some very minor  loss of the notation: no other examples of Mahler's use of this paper have yet been firmly identified, although Berthold Over has suggested (BONW, 41) that it is the same type as that used for the fair copy of first of the Kindertotenlieder. This is not implausible, but in the absence of a detailed physical description of the two papers (and in particular the rastral dimensions of AV4m) this cannot be confirmed.

The manuscript is accompanied by Alma Mahler's autograph presentation message to the recipients:

Das einzige und erste Manuscript des Liedes ›Ich athmet einen linden Duft‹ von Gustav Mahler ist am 17. April 1923 von mir Bernhard und Bella Panzer zu ihrer Vermählung geschenkt worden. Alma Maria Mahler.

The only and earliest manuscript of the song "Ich athmet einen linden Duft" by Gustav Mahler was given by me on April 17, 1923 to Bernhard and Bella Panzer on the occasion of their marriage. Alma Maria Mahler

Dr Bernhard Panzer was active as a patron of the visual arts and in particular of Anton Hanak (1875–1934), a sculptor closely involved with the abortive plans for a Mahler monument in Vienna.¹
