Notes

This manuscript, in the hand of  the arranger, Max Puttmann (who is identified as such in a pencil annotation on fol. 1r), served as the printer's copy for the first edition (PF5t1) and the plate numbers for the score (7458) and the orchestral parts (7459) have been added at the foot of fol. 1r, in black ink. A reference number, 28418, has been added in pencil in the top. r.h. corner , and (indicating that publication would be a quarto volume) in the top l.h. corner of fol. 1r.

The manuscript is not dated, and the Hofmeister Monatsbericht includes no entry for the first edition, but the plate numbers suggests that it was part of a batch of arrangements the Mahler songs prepared by Puttmann in late 1915 / early 1916.

The transposition necessitated revisions (mainly transpositions up an octave) in the string parts. Only the German text is included.
