  • This part set, apparently in use by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra from the 1920s until the early 1960s, is made up of copies of the first edition, but with two ms parts (Cl in EGraphic: flat sign, 1. Tpt) copied in 1920 and an undated ms. harp part)  presumably prepared to replace parts that found their way into Mahler's personal part set, GMPO2.

  • The associated full score, APF2, was once owned and annotated by Mahler.

  • Timings:
The timings are all given in minutes/seconds. In some cases the timing ostensibly supplied for the last movement clearly applies to the last two movements (which are performed attacca).

Presumably most of these performances did not include the first and second movement repeats (as they are not printed in the first editions of the score or parts), though in later years Bernstein did include them, and this may account for the timings of his 1962 performance. The recording of one of the Barbirolli performances in 1959 reveals that he included the repeat in the second movement.

The players' annotations were presumably done during performances, whereas the annotations on the folder are clearly more formal. The latter suggest a rather consistent pattern of gradually more leisurely performances, but the 1920 Stransky performance timed in the part used by second desk of the second violins stands outside that pattern.
