Preliminary
work on Revelge was completed by 2 July
1899 and, unusually, Mahler immediately began to prepare the
orchestral score, completing it by the middle of the month,
when he started work on the Fourth Symphony (see the
Chronology, the
notes to
[AV1],
and
NKGXIV/2,
382–3).
