Notes

This manuscript served as the printer's copy for the first edition (the plate number 4468 has been added in red pencil to fol. 2r), but the date at which it was copied is uncertain. Since Mahler added rehearsal numbers (in blue pencil) to the copy it was probably used by him for the first two performances on 29 January, 3 February and perhaps also on 1 June 1905.

The title on fol. 1r was modified in pencil: the first 'e' in Lieder was struck through. This reading seems to have carried through into the song heading supplied editorially on 2r, and had to be corrected in pencil by Mahler. The song appears to have been numbered '8' in red pencil, but this was subsequently overwritten with a lead pencil '13'. These changes presumably reflect stages in the evolution of the programmes for the two concerts of Mahler's songs in January and February: the song was actually the tenth in the concert on 29 January, but it was indeed the thirteenth in the second, on 3 February. The reference number 56871 has also been added to fol. 1r, in blue pencil.

It is noticeable that the letterpress elements needed on the first page of the printed score are not entered in full: in later manuscripts of the songs prepared for the printer they are either wholly, or partially rubber stamped at the foot of the page. Here their presence is merely indicated by the annotations Verlag and Cop- [i.e. Copyright]: cf. ACV4m.
