It has not been possible to suggest a narrower date-range for this copy: although the  title page cannot date from later than the second half of 1911, no information about the date of the French translation has been been discovered.

The pencil addition to the front wrapper of the GB-Lbl copy, 3758a, is presumably a reference to the edition number assigned to the full score of the cycle by Universal-Edition when the Viennese form ordered 5 copies on 4 March 1919. This was the only such order recorded in the UE Verlagsbücher: the copy was presumably supplied to the the library via J. Curwen & Sons Ltd, the post-WWI UK agents for UE, although the title page also bears the stamp of a music dealer in Königsberg:

The assignment of plate numbers is unexpected: the numeric component is the same as that for the full score, and as in that publication each song is assigned a separate alphabetic suffix. Publishers tended to avoid such duplications of plate numbers. The provision of separate oboe II and cor anglais parts was unnecessary: only one player was needed.

The GB-Lpc set was clearly used for performances with orchestras lacking some of the necessary wind instruments (e.g. bass clarinet and horns 3-4); it is also notable for the paste-overs in the vn II parts which provide an enharmonically respelled version of bb. 94–104.

Select bibliography: NPCML, No. 625; SWXIII/3, source BA I, p. vii; Eulenburg, source BüKl, p. xviii.

Edytha ('Ditha') Moser (22 April 1883–3 November 1969) was the daughter of the industrialist Karl Ferdinand Mautner Markhof (1834–1896) and, along with her husband, the artist and designer Koloman Moser (1868–1918), was a member of Mahler's inner circle of Viennese friends: the cover of these proofs of the song cycle bears an autograph dedication to her. She trained as an architect under Josef Hofmann at the Kunstbewerbschule, and later worked as a graphic artist until 1918.[2]

Despite Mahler's stipulation that the cycle was to be considered an indivisible whole, the fourth song only was published as the music supplement to the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik 72/20 (10 May 1905). (The periodical was at that time published by Kahnt).

This edition offers a version of the song that lies between those of the printer's copy (ACV), and the revised engraved text of APVmpr. [Need to locate a copy]

It is notable that the large octavo page size adopted by Kahnt is significantly smaller than the quarto format used by Schott, Weinberger and EWZG for their early publications of Mahler's songs, and by Kahnt for the Sieben Lieder.

This was the first order placed by UE: it is not clear whether the sheets for this issue were part of the batch printed in 1908, or (perhaps less likely) they were a separate order to Kahnt not recorded in the few surviving internal documents of the firm.

See RKGMK, 171. The title page (which, unlike front wrapper, does not refer to the English translation) and adverts are of different dates and offer conflicting information about the availability of Mahler's songs. The association of the copy described with the third impression of the first edition is on the basis that advert G indicates a date after c. October 1910 and the title page makes no reference to the Russian copyright legislation of 20 March 1911).

It is possible that the layout of the original plates was planned to allow for the subsequent incorporation of translations of the vocal texts: the  English words appear to have been added below the German original with no other modifications. Hence the bibliographic description used here is preferred to 'Second Edition'.

It is worth noting that  fol. 1 and 16 (i.e pp. 1/2 and 31/32), are narrower (191mm) is less than those in the rest of the gathering; a similar discrepancy can be found in PVm1p. Since these folios make up the  bifolio that forms the outer sheet of the gathering, it must be wondered whether the whole sheet (which carries the title page) was printed separately from the rest.

PVm1d   FIRST EDITION, SECOND STATE, UE ISSUE, FIRST IMPRESSION, medium voice, Ger/Eng – Leipzig: C.F. Kahnt Nachfolger / Vienna: Universal-Edition, August 1911

        Copies: none located

It is not clear whether the sheets for this issue were part of the batch printed in July 1911, or were a separate order to Kahnt not recorded in the few surviving internal documents of the firm. Either way, it seems likely that these were copies of the bilingual version.

This is a rare example of a U.E. issue with a dated advert, and confirms that the bilingual version (i.e. first edition, second state) was introduced in 1911.

See RKGMK, 171. Presumably this was a printing of the bilingual version of the cycle. Given the closeness of the delivery dates of this print run, and PFm1e, it seems possible that these were part of a single print run of either 1000 or 1300 copies. (See the notes on publication for a further discussion of this issue.)

See RKGMK, 171. The conjectural association of the first impression of the second edition of the medium-voice vocal score (i.e. the first to offer the texts in German and French) with this print order is made here on the basis that the plate number of the copy described confirms that this re-engraved score [confirm] was prepared in 1912. Moreover, from the surviving rtecords it appears that at the end of 1911 Kahnt did not need to re-order the first edition, second state, as it was holding substantial stock of that version (see the notes on the publication history of the cycle).

It is striking that unlike John Bernhoff, the translator responsible for the French text, Mme Camille Chevillard (i.e. Marguerite Chevillard (née Lamoureux), d. 1941), is named on the title page and front wrapper, both of which are in French, not German.

The title page and adverts are of different dates and offer conflicting information about the availability of Mahler's songs, but the inclusion of Kahnt advert C indicates that the copy dates from 1915 or later, and title page Aa was probably not used after the end of 1918.

The page size and total span (r) are slightly smaller than earlier impressions that have been examined.

The association the copy described with this particular UE issue is rather conjectural, not least because the mix of advertisements offers no clear guidance: whatever the date one or more of the adverts would have been anomalous.

The variant of the title page, Ma, indicates that this copy was almost certainly prepared after late 1918, and the wrapper design of the front wrapper was replaced after 1919, so the copy described can be associated with this impression with some confidence.

The copy is also notable because the page size is generally slightly larger than that of the other copies examined; except, that is, folios 1 and 16 (i.e pp. 1/2 and 31/32), the width of which (191mm) is less than the rest of the gathering. A similar discrepancy can be found in PVm1c.  It is also apparent that the paper is of a slightly different quality (slightly thinner). Since these pages are printed on the bifolio that forms the outer sheet of the gathering, it must be wondered whether the whole sheet (which carries the UE title page) was printed separately from the rest, either in Leipzig or Vienna. (The fact that the printer's device - which normally appears on p. 31 - is absent might offer some support for the latter scenario.)

This copy is printed on very poor quality, acid paper that is very fragile and brown in colour. The absence of prices on the title page suggests that this copy was produced during the period of hyperinflation in the early 1920s.

No arranger's manuscript, printer's copy or proofs for the high-voice full score have been located, and the identity of the musician responsible for its preparation is unknown. Although orchestral parts (POh1) and a piano-vocal score (PVh1) for the high-voice version were listed in the December 1915 issue of Hofmeister's Monatsbericht, there is no reference there or in subsequent issues to a high-voice full score and no price for it was ever listed on the Kahnt title pages and advertisements examined: it seems unlikely that such a score was ever offered for sale, though copies must have been available for hire. The UE Verlagsbuch contains no reference to full scores or parts of the high-voice version, although the transposition continued to be listed in the firm's orchestral catalogues up to the late 1930s.

The plate number prefix C.F.K. does not appear on the initial pages of songs, and the plate number is wholly lacking on p. 9. Bibliographically this is very similar to the 1919 UE issue, but the quality of the material and workmanship has declined: the paper was slightly more absorbent, and the card used for the wrappers was very acid and as a result the colour is now  brown-green; the registration of the title-page is crooked.
