Sieben Lieder – title pages

 

Passe-partout title pages were employed for editions  of full scores and vocal scores of  individual songs. The variants in content (items listed, prices, other information) offer a broad means of ordering and approximately dating copies, so all are reproduced here in what appears to be a chronological sequence.

 

Each main type is designated by a capital letter, followed by a lower case letter to identify a variant and where necessary by abbreviations in parentheses:

 

o = Orchesterausgabe

k = Klavierausgabe

u = UE oveprinting

 

 

The title pages used for the collective volumes (with piano and with orchestra) are listed at the end of the sequence.

Although generally many surviving copies of the full scores lack their wrappers, a few copies from 1915–18 (or possible later) with this variant title page have retained theirs: the front wrappers  adopt the design of tp G, with details of  additional transpositions and higher prices for the scores and parts (the piano-vocal score prices remained at 1905 levels). This suggests that such copies represent the remains of early print runs, that have been updated with new wrappers and the paste-over on the title page. In one recorded exemplar the Kahnt imprint on the title page has also been covered by a Universal-Edition paste-over (see PF5h1a (1912)).

Although from now on the title page design included Kindertotenlieder, this passe-partout title page was never adopted for printed copies of Kindertotenlieder. It must have been prepared between 1907 (after Liebst du um Schönheit was first published) and 1911 (when a radically altered design was prepared (see title page E, below)), but seems to have been used as least as late as 1915 (see the second exemplar listed below).

The reference to the Russian copyright law, dated 20 March 1911, offers a terminus post quem for this variant. It was rendered increasingly out-of-date by the publication of new transpositions from 1915 onwards.

The voice and piano versions of the three transpositions not listed on tp G but included here (i.e. nos 1, 4 & 5) were announced in the January 1917 issue of Hofmeister's Monatsbericht but there were no references to parallel publications for voice and orchestra.   Unfortunately Max Puttmann's manuscript of his low-voice orchestration of Revelge is undated.

The retention of the reference to the ducal appointment on title page H suggests that it probably dates from before the collapse of the German Reich and the establishment of the Weimar Republic in November 1918.  The significance of the change in copyright date has not been ascertained.
