A Cartoon of Mahler

C.F. Kahnt used a fairly limited number of adverts in the firm's publications of Mahler's songs, but their content evolved over time. This list seeks to provide a conjectural chronological sequence for each of the seven types (A-G), though the dates of a particular variant cannot usually be established with any certainty.

  • The list has been expanded

  • The voices ranges and keys have been removed from the Mahler listings
  • Of the Sieben Lieder, all but 1, 4, 5 and 7 are listed in three registers (hoch, mittel, tief/high, medium, low)
  • Kindertotenlieder is listed for medium and high voice
  • The raised prices for scores and parts have been adopted
  • Revised design and font

Ac Lieder für eine Singstimme mit Orchester oder Klavier

?1916–17

  • The original (type A) design and font are used

  • The original list of composers is followed (so the songs by Wilhelm Berger, H. Gottlieb-Noren and Hugo Kaun, and Reinecke's orchestration of Der Hirt auf dem Felsen are not included) and the details are unaltered

  • Some additional transpositions of Mahler's songs are included

  • The prices of the orchestral scores and parts of Mahler's songs have all been increased

This is the original type A design except for the revisions to the Mahler entries. The date of the introduction of this variant is unclear, not least because the revision of the Mahler entry was apparently not comprehensive: new transpositions from 1915/16 were included but only some of those that appeared in 1917: hence the conjectural dating offered here.

Ad Lieder für eine Singstimme mit Orchester oder Klavier

This is a curiously anachronistic version of the advertisement. It is in all but one respect an exemplar of the original type A advert, retaining the design of the frame, the letter-press of the advertising matter (long out-of-date) and the printer's details. The exception is the name of the publisher, which from 1917 was increasingly given in its original, shorter form (excluding 'Nachfolger'): see the brief note about the changes in ownership and trading name.
