The printer's copy was the full score copied by Alma Mahler (ACF3m); no proofs have been located. The surviving Kahnt documents (RKGMK, 172) indicate that this was the only printing of the sheets in the period 1905–15.

Sheets of the first impression in a rather later wrapper (1916). The binding of this copy is such that it is not clear whether it consisted of 7½ or 8 sheets (i.e. whether ff. [15–16] were removed during binding). The UE edition number '3748B' has been added in pencil at the top of the front wrapper of this British Library copy. The price of the score on the front wrapper has been over-stamped with 42.00, presumably in the period 1920–23.

        Copies: A-Wigmg N/Rü 3m/13

Sheets of the first impression in a rather later wrapper. The front wrapper has 3746 (the UE edition number) added in pencil at the foot of the page, and the price – 42.00 – has been added with a rubber stamp.

Universal-Edition assigned an edition number, U.E. 3746b, to this score and one copy was ordered on 2.xii.1918; the UE Verlagsbuch records no further orders, although the medium-voice score and parts continued to be advertised in UE catalogues until the late 1930s.

Print run: 300 [i.e. c. 10–15 sets]

        Copies: A-Wigmg N/Rü 3m/21

The printer's copy for this publication was probably the manuscript set prepared for the early, pre-publication performances in 1905 ([CO3m]). The surviving Kahnt documents (RKGMK, 172) indicate that there was only one printing of the parts in the period 1905–15.

Universal-Edition assigned an edition number, U.E. 3747b, to the orchestral parts and the UE Verlagsbuch records orders dated 2.xii.1918 for one set and three additional viola parts; no further orders are recorded, but nevertheless the medium-voice score and parts continued to be advertised in UE catalogues until the late 1930s.

        Select bibliography: SWXIII/4, EA I, p. vii

According to the data collated by Reinhold Kubik (RKGMK, 172), there were three printings of the song in the period 1905–1915, a total of 1100 copies: these must have all been of the medium voice version as the high- and low-voice versions of the piano-vocal score were not prepared until late 1916. The two later printings may have been for the two UE orders dating from 1910 and 1912 (in fulfilment of which a total 401 were delivered).

The layout of the UE Verlagsbuch entries for the piano-vocal scores of this song are misleading. Until early 1917 the medium-voice version was the only one available, so the UE records apparently showing orders placed in 1910, and 1912 for ed. no. 2777a (the UE edition number with suffix assigned to the high-voice version only late in 1916) must have been, in fact, for the medium-voice version described here.  It is therefore probable that the two orders placed in 1917 were for the new high- and low-voice transpositions. On the other hand, the exemplars examined suggest that after 1912 two further batches of the medium-voice version, both made up of copies of the second edition, were ordered by UE (PV3m2a and PV3m2b). On the assumption that the muddle concerns the first two transpositions listed, the original pattern of orders might be reconstructed thus:

PV3m1b

FIRST EDITION, UE ISSUE, second impression,  F major  - Leipzig: C.F. Kahnt Nachfolger / Vienna: Universal-Edition, 1912

Hofmeister: no entry

        Text: German only

Edition number: UE 2777  Plate number: 4467

Print ordered: 12.vii.1910    Copies received: 13.vii.1910   Print run: 200
        Copies: none located

See Fig. 1 and the explanatory note above.

PV3m2   SECOND EDITION, F major, Ger/Eng - Leipzig: C.F. Kahnt Nachfolger, [1916/17]

Hofmeister: no entry

Text: German and English (English words by John Bernhoff)

Edition number: none  Plate number: 7484

        Copies: none located

In the absence of any Hofmeister entry a conjectural date for this first impression of this edition can be based on the plate number. The song was re-engraved to accommodate the English translation and in the absence of any located copies, the basic description can be derived from the later UE issue (see below), although earliest impression listed here probably used title page G as a wrapper.

The printer's copy for this transposition has not been located (it was probably prepared by Max Puttmann) and no proofs have been found. In the absence of a Hofmeister entry, proposing a conjectural date for the first impression is difficult: the title page state suggests 1915–16, the plate number mid-1917.

Universal-Edition assigned an edition number, U.E. 3746a, to this score but the UE Verlagsbuch records no orders; nevertheless the high-voice score and parts continued to be advertised in UE catalogues until the late 1930s.

Universal-Edition assigned an edition number, U.E. 3747a, to the high-voice orchestral parts, and the UE Verlagsbuch records an order for four sets, dated  2.xii.1918; the high-voice score and parts continued to be advertised in UE catalogues until the late 1930s.

The transposition was probably prepared by Max Puttmann: neither the printer's copy nor any proofs have been located. In the absence of any located copies, a basic description can be derived from the later UE issue (see below); it is particularly notable that the tempo marking and performance instructions have been translated into Italian.

This was delivered two days before a new impression of Revelge (PV1h1), but although it shares the unusual feature of a U.E. advert on the back wrapper, it differs from that piano-vocal score in that it gives the text in both German and English.

The version for low voice and orchestra was transposed by Max Puttmann, c.1916/17 and his manuscript (CF3t) served as the printer's copy; no proofs have been located. In the absence of a Hofmeister entry the plate number (noted in Puttmann's score) suggests that it was part of a batch of newly originated material for the Mahler songs published in 1917, although this score may only have been autografiert (i.e. lithographed from writing), rather than engraved.

Universal-Edition assigned an edition number, U.E. 3746c, to this score but the UE Verlagsbuch records no orders; nevertheless the low-voice score and parts continued to be advertised in UE catalogues until the late 1930s.

        Copies: A-Wigmg N/Rü 3t/32

There is a faint ghost impression of an alternative plate number, 7615 (used for the low-voice collective volume containing all seven songs, first issued in mid-1917), above the correct number on p. 2. This copy cannot be unequivocally associated with either of the last two UE impressions.
