Working Paper:

C.F. Kahnt Front Wrappers for Individual Songs by Mahler

  A(o)

[June/July 1905]

  c.f title pages A(o) and A(k)
  • Printed copies of the full score and parts of the medium voice version of „Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen‟ were apparently not yet available.

The plate number sequence offers further evidence that their publication was indeed delayed, so presumably manuscript and/or lithographed performing material was only available on hire.

„Liebst du um Schönheit“ is not listed: the contract for its publication was not signed until 8 December 1906. The voice and piano version was first advertised in January 1907, and listed in the March 1907 issue of Hofmeister.

  B(o)

[after March 1911]

  • All songs except nos 1, 4, 5 and 7 are listed in three keys on the front wrapper

  • The prices of the scores and parts have been increased.

  • NB: the overprinting in the facsimile is not part of the standard design

No interim versions of the type A design have been located. The revised type B design must post-date the promulgation of the Russian copyright law in March 1911.

A low-voice version of Kindertotenlieder was never prepared; no price was given for the score of the high-voice Kindertotenlieder on any of the exemplars of type B(o) wrapper listed here.

  • The back wrapper lists all the the songs except nos. 1, 4, 5 and 7 as being available in three keys.

1915/16

  • All songs except nos 1, 4 and 7 are listed in three keys on the front wrapper

  • The prices of the scores and parts have been increased.

  • NB: the overprinting in the facsimile is not part of the standard design

  • A low-voice version of Kindertotenlieder was never prepared; no price was given for the score of the high-voice Kindertotenlieder on any of the title-pages or wrappers examined to date.

  • The back wrapper lists all the the songs except nos. 1, 4, 5 and 7 as being available in three keys: the inconsistency between front and back wrappers may have been inadvertent, or the result of a reluctance to incur the expense of re-originating the back wrapper.

This wrapper, a later (?) variant of B(o), appears to have been used frequently in conjunction with sheets that were either printed much earlier or
later impressions that inadvertently retained outdated title pages.

that of the front wrapper is nearer the original]

Colour facsimile of the front wrapper of (probably) the first Kahnt collective publication

  • This minimalist front wrapper has some striking features:
    • Sans serif font used throughout
    • New collection title (adopted from UE)
    • Omits any copyright or performance right statements
    • Elements that are standard in later versions are lacking:
      • Listing of the available transpositions
      • Omits the statement of the ducal appointment
      • Omits any statement of the place of publication
      • Adopts the short form of the publisher's name
  • The verso and the back wrapper (recto and verso) are blank
