The orchestration was by Max Puttmann (1863–10.vii.1935)¹ and his manuscript (CF7h) served as the printer's copy; no proofs have been located. In the absence of a Hofmeister entry, the plate number indicates a publication date in mid-1917. The duplication of adverts is unusual.

The orchestral score was assigned the edition number U.E. 3928a; although the UE Verlagsbuch records no orders for the song in this format, its availability was advertised in UE catalogues until at least 1937.

The DK-Kk copy is signed on the title page Rita Weise, probably the soprano Rita Meinl-Weise (1898–1987), and has been heavily annotated (in blue and red pencil) by an unidentified conductor responsible for similar annotations in a copy of the high-voice score of Um Mitternacht in the same collection (PF6h1a) that was probably also once owned by Meinl-Weise.

The parts were of Max Puttmann's arrangement were printed with typeset header and footer, and autographiert music text; no proofs have been located. In the absence of a Hofmeister entry, the plate number indicates  a publication date in mid-1917. The estimate of the print run for the part sets is based on the comparable figures for songs 3–6 in the collection provided by Reinhold Kubik (RKGMK, 172 summarized on the Sieben Lieder homepage).

The orchestral parts were assigned the edition number U.E. 3929a: although the UE Verlagsbuch records no orders for the song in this format its availability was advertised in UE catalogues until at least 1937.

The DK-Kk parts are all signed in pencil Rita Weise, probably the soprano Rita Meinl-Weise (1898–1987) and have been annotated in pencil by the conductor responsible for the markings in PF7h1.

This issue appeared as the music supplement to Musikalisches Wochenblatt  38 / Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, 74, No. 18 (2 May 1907). The two periodicals had merged in 1906 but at the beginning of 1908 the cumbersome double title was dropped in favour of Musikalisches Wochenblatt. From 1911 until 1919 it reverted to Neue Zeitschrift für Musik.

„Liebst du um Schönheit“ was  apparently printed from the first edition plates.

In addition to the Hofmeister listing the volume was also advertised in the Musikalisches Wochenblatt, 38/11 (14 March 1907), 286: this indicates that there were two formats available, a Grosse and a Kleine Ausgabe. The songs may have been re-engraved for one or both of these formats. See also the working paper Mahler's Music in Supplements, Albums and Magazines.

Hofmeister: iv.1907

This edition of the song formed part of a compilation volume, as listed in Hofmeister (see Fig. 2 above). The volume was also advertised in the Musikalisches Wochenblatt, 38/11 (14 March 1907), 286: this indicates that there were two formats available, a Grosse and a Kleine Ausgabe. The songs may have been re-engraved for one or both of these formats. The repertoire of this series was clearly aimed at a less high-brow constituency than Meister des Liedes (see below). See also the working paper Mahler's Music in Supplements, Albums and Magazines.

This collection of songs, which was available in high- and medium-voice versions, was advertised on Kahnt adverts D and G–Gb; „Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen‟ appears as no. 14 (pp. 54–7, pl. no. 5689) in the the collection, and „Liebst du um Schönheit‟ as no. 15 (pp. 58–59, pl. no. 5687). The new trilingual versions of the two songs were probably engraved at about the same time and it is notable that all of the other plate numbers in the volume are in the range 5641–5944, suggesting that the new plates needed for the collection were all prepared in the period from late 1909 to mid-1910.

With the exception of songs by Brahms and Richard Strauss, the copyrights were owned by Kahnt. It is not known whether there were later impressions of this collection. See also the working paper Mahler's Music in Supplements, Albums and Magazines.

Copies: A-Wst Mc 49306 (a heavily cropped copy, with no wrapper)

This ostensibly unprepossessing exemplar is notable for a number of reasons. The title page indicates that it was a UE issue, and that it probably dates from early in the Kahnt-UE licensing arrangement; the fact that Kindertotenlieder is not included in the list suggests a date before 1911 (see the notes to title page D). According to the UE Verlagsbuch the only relevant order would be the first for the song, placed on 8 October 1910, but unusually, the receipt date is the same (perhaps just a book-keeping error). On the other hand it seems curious that the first UE issue of the song would be bilingual. The French translation is that prepared for the Meister des Liedes compilation volume, also issued in 1910, and a French equivalent of the opening tempo marking is provided, although the other German performance directions are not also given in French; it is notable that the song's original plate number has been been retained. It is possible that the  French text was simply added to the original plates, which would account for the retention of the original plate number.

THIRD EDITION, SEPARATE IMPRESSION, Egraphic image of a flat major, Ger/Eng/Fr – Leipzig: C.F. Kahnt Nachfolger, 1916

Hofmeister: iii. 1916

        Text: German, English and French

Edition number: none  Plate number: [5687]

        Copies: none located

Separate copies of the third edition of the high-voice version of the song may have been printed between 1910 and 1916, though if so it remains unclear why the Hofmeister listing of this tri-lingual edition was delayed. In the absence of a located copy of this edition the bilingual state of the plates (see PV7h3b) is notable for revealing that the casting-off of the song had been radically revised.

PV7h     UNIDENTIFIED EDITION, U.E. ISSUE, Egraphic image of a flat major – Leipzig: C.F. Kahnt Nachfolger / Vienna: Universal-Edition, 1916

        Copies: none located

This was the second order for the song listed in the UE Verlagsbuch: the sheets dispatched to Vienna in fulfilment could have been of the first edition, third edition (sent a couple of months before its publication was announced in Hofmeister) or the fourth (printed from the re-engraved plates prepared in 1910).

See the UE Verlagsbuch for notes on the revisions and corrections to the record of the order for this printing. A comparison with the comparable bilingual impression of the medium-voice version (PVm3b) suggests that this bilingual variant was created in the same way: by simply masking out the French translation during the transfer process:

All the performance instructions in German have been translated into Italian and the printed area is enclosed within a single-line rectangular border.

There is apparently no evidence to unequivocally associate the copy described specifically with the 1920 or 1921 UE impression.

This was the first of the three transpositions of the orchestration by Max Puttmann to be published: his manuscript (CF7m) served as the printer's copy; no proofs have been located.

The orchestral score was assigned the edition number U.E. 3928b: although the UE Verlagsbuch records no orders for the song in this format its availability was advertised in UE catalogues until at least 1937. The copy described is a Kahnt issue, but the UE edition number has been added in pencil next to the song title in the listing on the front wrapper.

Neither the printer's copy, nor proofs for this edition have been located. The first (semi-public) performance of the song was apparently given on 8 February 1907: it is possible that one or two manuscript copies of the song (medium voice) were prepared for the baritone, Anton Moser and his [unidentified] accompanist, but it is more likely that they were using early page proofs.

This edition was advertised in the Musikalisches Wochenblatt, 38/10 (7 March 1907), 262.

Each volume of this collection of modern songs published by Kahnt was issued in two transpositions (high- or medium-voice) and two sizes (grosse Ausgabe or kleine Ausgabe). In addition to the Hofmeister listing the volume was advertised in the Musikalisches Wochenblatt, 38/11 (14 March 1907), 286. The repertoire of this series was clearly aimed at a less high-brow constituency than Meister des Liedes. See also the working paper Mahler's Music in Supplements, Albums and Magazines.

The plate number assigned to volume two of the small-format, medium-voice version appears rather anomolous (see the Working Paper on Kahnt Plate Numbers for the wider context).

Edition number: none  Plate number: 9

'Liebst du um Schonheit' was entirely (and accurately) re-engraved by Breitkopf & Härtel so that it could fit onto 1½ pages (pp. 318–9): a task made easier by the omission of any translation.

See also the working paper Mahler's Music in Supplements, Albums and Magazines, where it is suggested that Sang und Klang may have been the model for Universal-Edition's Excelsior Albums (1911, 1913, 1915). One important feature the latter did not adopt from their predecessor was the Einleitung, with its biographies and photographs.

PV7m3a     SECOND EDITION, second issue, C major, Ger/Eng/Fr – Leipzig: C.F. Kahnt Nachfolger, 1916

Hofmeister: iii. 1916

        Text: German, English and French

Edition number: none  Plate number: [5688]

        Copies: none located

Other impressions of the second edition of the medium-voice version of the song may have been printed for Kahnt between 1910 and 1916, though if so, it is unclear why the Hofmeister listing of the separate tri-lingual edition of the songs was delayed.

Text: German and English (English words by John Bernhoff)

Edition number: none  Plate number: 5688

Copies: A-Wue; D-B Km 245386 (possible exemplar: not examined); GB-Lpc [unnumbered]

The title page does not reflect the second round of price increases introduced c. 1920/21 suggesting that this bi-lingual copy could be an exemplar of the 1920 impression. A comparison with the trilingual impression described and illustrated below (Fig. 8) suggests that this bi-lingual variant was created by simply masking out the French translation during the transfer process. The printed area is enclosed within a single-line rectangular border.

Printing method: Lithographic transfer from engraved plates

Text: German, English (English words by John Bernhoff), French (Traduction française de Mme Camille Chevillard)

Edition number: U.E. 2781b  Plate number: 5688

Print ordered: 12.x.1921    Copies received: 15.xii.1921   Print run: 300

Copies: D-B 245386 (not seen); DK-Kk U204, mu 6807.0810;  GB-Lpc 2-9200181 (ex coll. Ritschy Wolf), and a second copy, signed in pencil [?] R van Driel, Augustus 1941 (possibly the contralto Jacoba Repelaer van Driel, 1889–1967)

In this trilingual state the printed area is surrounded by a two-line decorative border. The association of the copy described with the 1921 UE issue is conjectural: the title page, which reflects the second round of price increases, and the advertisement on p. 4 suggest that the copy described could be an exemplar of one of the UE impressions from 1921–25. Whether this apparent return to the trilingual format was intentional, or the result of an inadvertent use of the earlier form of the plates, is not clear.
