  Presumably the manuscript's early history is the same as for AF2: Alma Mahler, 1911 (as part of the composer's estate); gift to Willem Mengelberg, 1920; Willem Mengelberg Stichting, Amsterdam, 1951 (after Mengelberg's death; deposited in N-DHgm in 1982)

Notes

 

This Einlage, which contains an expanded introduction for timpani, replaces the opening bars of the movement in ACF1 and was used by Weidig when copying ACF2 (see the description of the autograph timpani part (AO) for the details and conjectural chronology of this complex revision process). It could have been prepared at any time after the creation of AO (i.e. January or February 1895) and before the copying of ACF2 (sometime March–October 1895).
