Notes

1

The string parts are divisi throughout, and parts on separate sheets are provided for the 1. and 2. Hälfte - hence the format of the make-up information here. This publication format also invites the question of how Mahler wished the divisi to work: divisi at the desk (the outer player at each desk takes the upper line, the inner player the lower) or divisi by desk (the two players at a desk play the same part, odd-numbered desks playing the upper part, even-numbered the lower). The latter arrangement is more convenient for page turns, an issue that is only pertinent to the first vn 1 part in this song, because this is the only string part to extend onto a second page. For a more extended discussion of the general issues see Norman del Mar, Anatomy of the Orchestra (London: Faber & Faber, 1983), p. 36ff.

No direct evidence for the size of the initial print-run has been traced, but it was perhaps about 200 copies (see the notes to PF51ah.). The score and the parts, PO51h have the printed metronome mark: graphic symbol for a crotchet= 104. No scores used by Mahler have been located.

In 1910 Universal-Edition acquired the publication rights for all the works previously owned by the Erste Wiener Zeitungsgesellschaft and issued by Weinberger or Doblinger. This transaction was recorded in the UE Verlagsbuch on 17 November with an entry of  presumably the number of remaining copies of the full score in stock, of 176. It is unlikely that more than one impression had been printed, so the original EWZG/Weinberger print rum was probably 200 copies.

Initially Universal-Edition withdrew the scores from sale, so they, like the parts, were only available on hire (see the note on the publication history); in addition edition numbers were assigned to scores and the original imprint on the title page was pasted over with a Universal-Edition label.

        Select bibliography: SWXIV/2, xvii-xviii; NKGXIV/2, xviii-xix

Early in 1912 the original wrappers were replaced with a newly-printed Universal-Edition version and the advert on the back wrapper, dated IV. 1912, indicates that the full scores were again on sale (at higher prices). Despite this, the UE Verlagsbuch records no printings of the full score although it continued to be listed for sale in UE catalogues until the late 1930s.

Copies: A-Wn MS4436-4°/1.2 (Pflichtexemplar 82/1901); GB-Lpc 2-9200133 (lacks the parts for trumpet and cymbals; see also the notes below)

        Select bibliography: SWXIV/2, xvii-xviii, 320 (source EASt); NKGXIV/2, xviii-xix, 359 (source EASt)

The A-Wn copy bears a handwritten note 82/1901 which probably refers to the year of deposit. As the front wrapper reveals, the orchestral parts were originally offered for sale. Although the individual parts indicate that the performance rights are reserved (Auffürungsrecht vorbehalten), they give no information about the publisher or rights holder: this information appears only on the front wrapper.

In 1910 Universal-Edition formally acquired the publication rights for all the works previously owned by the Erste Wiener Zeitungsgesellschaft and issued by Weinberger or Doblinger. This transaction was recorded in the UE Verlagsbuch for this song on 17 November, with an entry – presumably the number of remaining copies of the parts in stock – of 183. However, it is unclear what was counted: parts sets, or individual parts.

The make-up of the set is unusual: all the string parts are divisi throughout, and two different printed parts (1te Hälfte (1.1) and 2te Hälfte (1.2) etc.) provided for each. There are a large number of string parts in the GB-Lpc set: 7, 7; 6, 6; 5, 5; 4, 4; 4, 4, which suggests they may may include parts from more than one set. Some are marked in ballpoint, but others are annotated in pencil and one of the these, a double bass part, is dated 10./XII. 1907., the date of a performance under Bruno Walter in Vienna, the last during Mahler's lifetime.

PO51ah     FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE, Bgraphic image of a flat sign phrygian – Vienna: Universal-Edition, 1912

Print ordered: 01.i.1912    Copies received: 23.i.1912   Print run: vn I, II: 200; vla, vcl, db: 100

Copies: none located

Up the the end of the 1930s Universal-Edition only made orchestral parts available on hire or by agreement (some singers clearly owned their own sets). This printing, of string parts only, is the only one listed in the UE Verlagsbuch, and probably reflects a demand for replacement or additional parts. It is nonetheless notable that no other printings are listed.

In 1914 most of the voice and piano scores of the songs were republished by Universal-Edition: the musical text were revised to bring it more in line with that of the orchestral versions: this involved not only changes to and additions of various performance markings but also the standardisation of the vocal line and the verbal text.

As the double plate number implies, the original plates engraved by EWZG, revised and re-used by UE for its two-volume publications of the collection (see PVc2), were again used for this separate publication. The new edition was published in high- and low-voice versions, hence the introduction of the suffixes a and b to the edition and plate numbers.  The title page reflects the difficulty of accommodating the letter press text of the title page inside the decorative border.

PV53h   THIRD EDITION, Bgraphic image of a flat sign phrygian, Ger/Eng Vienna: Universal-Edition, 1920

Printing method: lithographic transfer from engraved plates

Text: German and English (English version by Annie Funk)
Print ordered: 12.ii.1920    Copies received: 22.xi.1920   Print run: 1003

Edition number: 3643a    Plate number: U.E. 1691ª· 3643ª·

Copies: D-B 244 828; GB-Lpc 2-9200701

This was the first and only pre WWII edition to include Annie Funk's English version; the paper quality is poor compared with that of the pre-WWI copies. The UE Verlagsbuch records no further printings before 1963.

PRINTED FULL SCORES - Low voice

Copies: none located

The UE Verlagsbuch records no printings of the full score for the low voice version: these scores were presumably only available on hire. They continued to be listed in the UE catalogues up to the late 1930s.

PRINTED ORCHESTRAL PARTS - Low voice

Copies: none located

The UE Verlagsbuch records no printings of orchestral parts for the low voice version: these parts were presumably only available on hire. They continued to be listed in the UE catalogues up to the late 1930s.

PRINTED PIANO-VOCAL SCORES - Low voice
PV51l   FIRST EDITION, A phrygian Vienna: Universal-Edition, 1914

Analysis: [1]= tp, [2]=blank; 39=music, [10]=blank

        Text: German
Print ordered: 19.iii.1914    Copies received: 22.vi.1914   Print run: 300

Edition number: 3643b    Plate number: U.E.1691b.3643b

Copies: D-B 244 829 (not examined); US-Wc M1614.M212 BB (date stamped 6.vii.1914)

The UE Verlagsbuch notes 'Copyright 4./VI 14' for this low voice transposition; the Library of Congress records give 2.v.1914 as the date of publication, and 6.vii. 1914 as the date date of receipt, so an advance copy must have been supplied. The transposition appears to be based on the second edition of the high-voice, piano-vocal score: as the double plate number implies, the original plates engraved by EWZG, revised and re-used by UE for its two-volume publications of the collection (see PV52h), were again used for this separate publication. The suffix b to the edition and plate numbers identifies the low-voice transposition.

PV52l   SECOND EDITION, A phrygian, Ger/Eng Vienna: Universal-Edition, 1920
Text: German and English (English version by Annie Funk)
Print ordered: 28.ii.1920    Copies received: 28.xi.1920   Print run: 498
Edition number: 3643b   Plate number: unknown

This was the first and only pre WWII edition to include Annie Funk's English version. The UE Verlagsbuch records no further printings before 1963.
