Notes

This manuscript, in the hand of  the arranger, Max Puttmann (who is identified as such in a pencil annotation), served as the printer's copy for the first edition (PF3t1) and the plate numbers for the score (7791) and the orchestral parts (7792) have been added at the foot of fol. 1r, in pencil. A reference number, 75935/6, has been added in the r.h. margin of fol. 1r.

The manuscript is not dated, and the Hofmeister Monatsbericht includes no entry for the first edition, but the plate numbers suggests that it was part of a batch of arrangements the Mahler songs prepared by Puttmann in late 1916 or early 1917. Puttmann makes some modest changes to Mahler's orchestration, not all of which are necessitated by the downward transposition. The German text only is included.
